We are sad to announce that one of our founder members in 1956, Eric Jennings, passed peacefully away on Saturday 21st May, 2022.
Eric played as a hooker at various levels as the club sought to establish itself during the late 1950's playing in various locations around Reading. Finally settling on Palmer Park before acquiring its current land and developing our clubhouse and grounds at Rosehill in the early 70’s.
Initially Eric carried out all sorts of duties but primarily headed the fund raising activities. He was instrumental in creating the Ghosts Sunday side which provided playing and fun opportunities for all.
Latterly he became involved in setting up the Minis and Juniors and his two sons Kevin and Darren both played regularly. Darren won a scholarship to Wellington College and was captain and scrum half during the 1st XV’s first ever unbeaten season.
He was also renowned for providing jobs for those ‘out of work’ at his swimming pool installation company.
He regularly attended social events at the club, including last seasons Christmas lunch.
Due to the absence of any coaching opportunities at Rosehill he became a Colts coach at Harlequins and subsequently joined local rivals as an assistant coach during a very successful period.
He always expressed his views, and then his views on his views which lead to some very lively debates.
Eric thank you for your contribution to the establishment and successful growth of Abbey. RIP.
Eric’s funeral will be held at Reading Crematorium on the Henley Road at 1:45 pm on Friday 10th June.Everyone is invited to join them to celebrate Eric’s life at Reading Abbey Rugby Club, Rosehill afterwards.
